Chrome OS and the Google Pioneers

Avidly wondering if I was one of the thousands that won the free Chrome OS laptop called CR-48. It looks like there are three being delivered to my neighborhood according to this web app.

I’m wondering what the experience of the apps I’ve built will function like when in the new Chrome OS environment completely independent from a desktop.

What is the screen size?
What is the point of the camera built into it?
What will the real purpose of a machine like this serve besides (twitter, and facebook)?

I may have to tweak some of my apps that now rely on downloading to the desktop considering there is no desktop on the Chrome OS.

I have read mixed views about the Chrome OS pilot, but I think a fast simple computer that doesn’t slow you down on the web is a great idea and I’m all for it. I’ve become pretty addicted to the Chrome Browser since March 10′ when extensions came out, before I was a pretty extreme mozilla user who had so many extensions that the program would take countless minutes and memory to load up.

Anyway I hope I get one, maybe you will too. You can sign up to win one until December 24th.
So sign up now!

  1. Good luck getting one. I hope you do so you can test your apps on the OS. I have been using mine since I got it on Monday and so far I am impressed. I’m a Computer Science major, so I take computing seriously. While the Cr-48 would never be my primary computer, it does make a good portable. I’ve been testing your app with it. I only wish it had in-line code highlighting and the ability to work on multiple files at once.

Still, so far it has a similar experience to your app in Google Chrome for Windows. You can download to the Chrome OS downloads folder, upload from the same folder, and all the other functions work well online and offline. Overall, I’d say its a 100% compatible app.

Anyways, hope you get your Cr-48 soon. If you would like me to beta test for you, let me know. I’d be more than happy to.

  2. The latest word from Google is that they suspended shipments for the holidays but are resuming them now. So if you applied for one, you are probably still on the list. If you haven’t applied for one, the applications are still being accepted.

One other note – I haven’t gotten one yet, but apparently Google is sending emails to some of the Cr-48 users inviting them to participate in a feedback session (under NDA) with Google engineers / usability experts. You can either have them in your home or meet them in some public place, or keep a diary. There are $50 – $75 gift cards / charitable donations for the selected participants. If I get one of those emails, I’m probably going to go for the “public place” meeting (if I get to pick the place.)

    • Sounds like the lucky few users will have quite a hands on learning experience with the Chrome Developers. Thanks for your update. Can you send me a Screenshot of what Chrome Editor looks like on the Chrome OS.
